Welcome!  To help you plan a hassle-free vacation, here is some advance information.  Seven Cousins does not meet ADA requirements.  We have made the best modifications that we can within the constraints of providing a comfortable vacation experience for a wide range of guests.

Elevator (34 inches wide by 45 inches deep):  Remind your party that the elevator will not move unless both doors are closed securely.  All guests should leave the elevator closed and ready to be “called” by the next person.  Guests not able to close the doors firmly should NEVER use the elevator unescorted.

Doors:  All interior and exterior doors are 3 ft., with these exceptions:  Our deck sliders, though measuring 6 ft., open to only 29 inches.  Bathroom pocket doors in the Laughing Gull/Sanderling bath are 30 inches.

Decks:  Our decks are stepped down to preserve the views.  If you normally travel with a folding metal ramp, you might want to bring it, in order to have access to the decks.

Bathrooms:  Heron, Pelican, Canada Goose, and Lucky Ducks bathrooms all have roll-in showers and pedestal sinks.  Swan and Laughing Gull/Sanderling bathrooms have vanities and shower/tubs.  All toilets are regular 16 inch height.  We have installed grab bars wherever walls would permit.  If you need additional helps, you should bring them.  Toilets with grab bars are:  upstairs powder room on left side; Heron bathroom on left side; Pelican bathroom on right side; and downstairs powder room on right side.  Both powder rooms have pedestal sinks.

Kitchen:  The kitchen is not really designed for the wheelchair cook, but we’ve tried to leave space for you to get around in order to supervise!  There are a microwave and ice maker below counter height, so, with a little forethought, you should be able to get snacks and drinks on your own.

Beds, etc.:  All springs and mattresses are on frames, and measure 26 inches off the floor, with the exception of Pelican, which has a real bedstead and measures 34 inches off the floor, and Lucky Ducks, which has lower bunks just 18 inches off the floor.

Ship Watch Game Table:  This games area is 8 steps up and inaccessible by elevator.  If you can’t reach the Ship Watch, and plan to play cards during your visit, you’ll find a folding card table stored in the Heron closet.  Please bring it up the elevator, and use dining chairs with it.

Boardwalk to the Beach:  The boardwalk is built flush to follow the contours of the dunes, as current environmental regulations mandate.  It is sufficiently wide and smooth for wheelchairs, but has a few relatively steep grades, and no guardrails.  Plan on taking a buddy to the beach!  During Hurricane Isabel, about 1/3 of our boardwalk toward the beach end was buried by sand, and we did not receive permission from the National Park Service to restore it.  The good news is that the walk to the beach is a much more level one now.
